Why has high-silica fabric become the preferred choice for slag protection?

Time : 2025-12-12

High silica fabric is a high-temperature resistant inorganic fiber material woven from high-purity silica (SiO₂ content ≥96%) through a special process. Its core properties perfectly meet the strict requirements of slag protection in welding operations. The temperature of the welding slag produced during the welding process can reach 800-1500℃. Ordinary cotton cloth and chemical fiber cloth can burn instantly. Although metal plates can withstand high temperatures, they are heavy and easy to conduct heat. However, high-silicon oxygen cloth can be used for a long time in a high-temperature environment of 1000℃ and can withstand a short-term instantaneous temperature of 1700℃. When the welding slag splashes, it will not burn, melt, or produce toxic smoke. It has eliminated the fire hazard from the root. Meanwhile, its fiber structure is dense and highly flexible, which can closely adhere to the complex contours of equipment surfaces, pipes, steel structures, etc. Even at irregular parts such as bends and corners, it can form a protective barrier without blind spots, preventing welding slag from penetrating the gaps and causing equipment damage or personnel scalding.

I. Practical Application Scenarios and Operation Skills of High silica fabric Welding Slag

1. Core application scenarios

In industrial welding sites: such as the construction of steel structure workshops, bridge welding, and the manufacturing of mechanical equipment, it is used to cover precision instruments, cable lines, paint coatings, flammable building materials, etc. beneath the welding points to prevent damage from the burning of welding slag.

Pipe and container welding: When pipe butt welding and pressure vessel welding, wrap the outer wall of the pipe or the inner wall of the container to prevent welding slag from accumulating on both sides of the weld seam and affecting the welding quality, and at the same time protect the anti-corrosion layer inside the container.

Maintenance and renovation operations: In confined space welding such as equipment inspection and old facility renovation, high-silicon oxygen cloth is lightweight (about 200-400g/), easy to cut, and can be quickly laid to form temporary protection. No complex cleaning is required after the operation.

2. Key points for correct operation

When laying, it is necessary to ensure that the high-silicon oxygen fabric completely covers the protected area. The edges should be fixed with high-temperature resistant tape or pressed down with heavy objects to prevent the fabric from shifting due to air flow during welding.

For large-area protection, multiple pieces of high-silicon oxygen cloth can be spliced for use. The overlapping width at the splicing point should not be less than 5cm to prevent welding slag from leaking through the gap.

After the operation, if welding slag adheres to the fabric surface, it can be gently tapped to fall off. Avoid pulling hard to prevent fiber damage. Intact high-silicon oxygen fabric can be reused many times.

When storing, keep away from oil stains and sharp objects. Place it in a dry and well-ventilated area to avoid the impact of a humid environment on its high-temperature resistance.
